Orthogonal vs Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access with Finite Input Alphabet and Finite Bandwidth

چکیده
For a two-user Gaussian multiple access channel (GMAC), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), a well known orthogonal-multiple-access (O-MA) scheme has been preferred to non-orthogonal-multiple-access (NO-MA) schemes since FDMA can achieve the sum-capacity of the channel with only single-user decoding complexity [Chapter 14, Elements of Information Theory by Cover and Thomas]. However, with finite alphabets, in this paper, we show that NO-MA is better than OMA for a two-user GMAC. We plot the constellation constrained (CC) capacity regions of a two-user GMAC with FDMA and time division multiple access (TDMA) and compare them with the CC capacity regions with trellis coded multiple access (TCMA), a recently introduced NO-MA scheme. Unlike the Gaussian alphabets case, it is shown that the CC capacity region with FDMA is strictly contained inside the CC capacity region with TCMA. In particular, for a given bandwidth, the gap between the CC capacity regions with TCMA and FDMA is shown to increase with the increase in the average power constraint. Also, for a given power constraint, the gap between the CC capacity regions with TCMA and FDMA is shown to decrease with the increase in the bandwidth. Hence, for finite alphabets, a NOMA scheme such as TCMA is better than the well known OMAC schemes, FDMA and TDMA which makes NO-MA schemes worth pursuing in practice for a two-user GMAC.

On the Two-User SISO-Gaussian and MIMO-Fading MAC with Finite Input Alphabets
Constellation Constrained (CC) capacity regions of two-user SISO Gaussian Multiple Access Channels (GMAC) are computed in this paper for several Non-Orthogonal and Orthogonal Multiple Access schemes (abbreviated as NO-MA and O-MA schemes respectively). For NO-MA schemes, a metric is proposed to compute the angle(s) of rotation between the input alphabets such that the CC capacity regions are ma...
متن کاملA Fair Power Allocation for Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access in the Power Domain
This paper presents an investigation on the performance of the Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) in the power domain scheme. A Power Allocation (PA) method is proposed from NOMA throughput expression analysis. This method aims to provide fair opportunities for users to improve their performance. Thus, NOMA users can achieve rates higher than, or equal to, the rates obtained with the convent...
متن کاملUplink Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access with Finite-Alphabet Inputs
This paper focuses on the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) design for a classical two-user multiple access channel (MAC) with finite-alphabet inputs. In contrast to most of existing NOMA designs using continuous Gaussian input distributions, we consider practical quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations at both transmitters, the sizes of which are assumed to be not necessarily ...
متن کاملORTHOGONAL ZERO INTERPOLANTS AND APPLICATIONS
Orthogonal zero interpolants (OZI) are polynomials which interpolate the “zero-function” at a finite number of pre-assigned nodes and satisfy orthogonality condition. OZI’s can be constructed by the 3-term recurrence relation. These interpolants are found useful in the solution of constrained approximation problems and in the structure of Gauss-type quadrature rules. We present some theoretical...
متن کاملMathematical Modeling of Gas Adsorption Processes in Packed Bed: The Role of Numerical Methods on Computation Time
Rigorous mathematical modeling of adsorption processes in packed beds involves time-consuming computations which are considered as the fundamental weakness of such thorough mathematical models. Thus, reducing the computation time was a key factor in improving adsorption mathematical models. In order to achieve this goal, an attempt was made to know how much using different numerical methods inf...
